University Town Center began as Prince
George's Metro Center in 1961 with the vision of a city-within-a-city.
The core office buildings were designed by noted architect
Edward Durrell Stone.
In 2001 the first phase of new development began with the
addition of the modern, Class A office building, Metro
4, and above-ground parking structure, Garage A. In
2005 construction began on the second phase of new development
in what is now known as University Town Center in reference
to the proximity to the University of Maryland main campus.
Garage B was created below what would become the Towers
at UTC, One Independence
Plaza Condominiums, Lofts
22 Condominiums, retail storefronts
and Independence Plaza. By 2007 construction was substantially
complete with retail end caps added to the Metro
1 and Metro 2 office buildings,
and the construction of the new Metro
5 office building integrated into the structure of the
Royale 14 movie theater
with additional retail frontage.
University Town Center is Metro accessible via the
Prince George's Plaza stop on the Green Line with shuttle
service provided by UTC. There are also city and local bus
stops within the UTC campus. University Town Center is a
mixed use development which incorporates:
- Casual dining and quick serve restaurants
- Day care center
- Luxury condominiums
- Student housing
- Medical offices and research facilities
- Public and private sector office space
- Community college classrooms
- U.S. Post Office
- Surface and garage parking
- A satellite Police Station
- State-of-the-art 14 screen movie theater
- Central open air plaza with an interactive fountain.
